‘Tis a Gift to be Simple is a giant spool weaving loom. I wanted to create a place where I could do a repetitive action to escape.
The weaving ring can be raised and lowered so that I can get in and out of the ever-growing tube of woven yarn. Once I have exhibited the piece, I undo the weaving and start over. It is crafted from birds eye maple, hard maple, cherry, mdf, nautical rope and yarn.
The title comes from the Shaker song:
‘Tis a gift to be simple
‘Tis a gift to be free
‘Tis a gift to come down where we ought to be
and when we find ourselves in the place just right
‘Twill be in the valley of love and delight
When true simplicity is gained
To bow and to bend we ‘shant be ashamed
To turn, to turn, will be our delight
Till by turning, turning, we come ’round right
